For nine days before Christmas many Filipino Catholics celebrate Simbang Gabi. This novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated with Mass early in the morning at 4:00 or 5:00 AM. The early time is a remnant from the days when many Filipinos worked in the rice fields and sugar cane plantations and so needed to perform their religious duties before the work day began. Parols, large decorated lanterns fashioned in the shape of a star, would guide the faithful to Mass in the hour before dawn. The novena concludes on Christmas Eve day, with the Misa de Gallo, or "Rooster's Mass," celebrated with great fervor by the entire community. Many communities hold competitions for the best parol, which remains in church until the Epiphany as a reminder of the star of Bethlehem.
Join us as CAFE's Catholic Minds - Catholic Matters series continues with Fr. Fred Licciardi C.PP.S. on December 6. Thomas Merton taught his novices a way of praying that allowed them to enter the school of wisdom provided by their most personal experiences. We will explore the spiritual teachings of Thomas Merton. An emphasis will be given to Merton's insights into the contemplative path along which we learn to live in habitual awareness of God's presence. We will examine key texts from Merton's writings featuring the monk's understanding of the value of his relationships with others as guidance for creating his own destiny to love and seek God. Our hope is that this evening will lead us in a new way of meditation as a practice for ourselves.
If you would like to provide a poinsettia or greens for the environment this Christmas season, please print out this form and bring to the Parish Ministry Center or drop in the collection basket. Please join us for an old fashioned caroling experience. We will gather on Monday, December 4 at 6:30 PM in the Narthex of the church. As we walk the close-by neighborhood and offer our songs to willing listeners, we will gift them with candy canes. After warming the hearts of our neighbors, we will return to the narthex and warm our noses and toes while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. We can promise easy to read music sheets and a truly enjoyable time, so please plan to join us and sing along. All are welcome – adults and children too. We look forward to seeing you there!

There were 43 whole blood units collected on this Drive which will potentially save 129 lives! Thanks to all of those who gave unselfishly of themselves to help others. Their generosity will help our neighbors in need— including cancer patients, critically ill newborns, accident victims, and many more who have illnesses requiring blood products. - LifeSource and the Hoffman/Schaumburg Knights of Columbus
