We are beginning to wrap up an incredible academic year at St. Hubert Catholic School! Here are just a few of the highlights from 2017-2018.
Service: Feeding the Hungry
Our school came in first place out of 214 schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Soup-er Stadium Challenge. This was the result of us all coming together as a parish community to help feed the less fortunate as we helped stock the Catholic Charities food pantries.
4th grade students took a field trip to Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg. There, they “turned hunger into hope” by packing nutritious meals for hungry children around the world.
Our 8th graders worked with our Encore 55+ group to pack lunches for the homeless in suburban Cook County.
Our Student Council hosted a spring food drive to benefit the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry and collected over 200 items. The food pantry helps provide meals for 600-700 families per month.
Science: An Award Winning Year!
St. Hubert School students competed for the first time in the Rube Goldberg machine building competition. They were among the top three teams in the apprentice category at Hoffman Estates High School. From there, they advanced to the national finals at the Museum of Science and Industry. They were the proud winners of the 2018 Professor Butts’ Creative Spark Award for their machine that poured a bowl of cereal! In addition to making us very proud, they earned a $500 check for our school. You can learn more about Rube Goldberg Competition at rubegoldberg.com
Through the Army Educational Outreach Program, eCYBERMISSION, two of our eighth grade teams received awards for the State of Illinois finishing first and second. Learn more at ecybermission.com.
Summer at St. Hubert School School may be out for the summer, but there are still things to do at St. Hubert School. Check out our school’s website for all of our summer camps.
Camp Invention: June 11-15. Fun, hands-on activities that encourage problem solving, teamwork, entrepreneurship and curiosity.
Totus Tuus: A Spiritual Camp June 18-22. A week filled with faith, fun and friends for students from 1st through 6th grade. There’s a program in the evening for teens.
Passport to Learning: July 2018. A fun way to improve math and literacy skills. One camp is for first and second graders; another for third and fourth graders.
Camp Out Camp: July 2018. Pre-Kindergartners and Kindergartners will have fun exploring the great outdoors and learning other things along the way.
Our Report Card: The Year Ahead
Here are a few of the new developments that our families can look forward to in the 2018-19 school year:
Technology: We’re on the Way! We are pleased to report we are ready to implement the first year of a three-year plan to bring 1:1 instruction to St. Hubert. Thanks to a successful year of fundraising and donations, this summer we will completely update our school’s Wi-Fi infrastructure to accommodate 1:1 devices and 100 new devices will be purchased for the Fall semester. We are on our way to meeting our goal.
Stay tuned for more information on which devices our school will use, how teachers will be trained, and what it will look like in our classrooms.
Big Ideas for our Math Curriculum We will be renewing our contract with “Go Math” for grades K-5. Grades 6-8 will adopt a new math series called “Big Ideas” from National Geographic. Our junior high math teachers thoroughly examined several curriculum options and determined that it best suits the needs of our students.
Science Curriculum Improvements Science teacher, Kelly O’Hara, will begin the process of making St. Hubert a STEM certified school. We have also purchased a plot of land in the Hoffman Estates community garden, which is adjacent to our school. We have received a generous donation to help fund this effort through our local Knights of Columbus. Our first and second grade students have been busy growing various vegetables in our STEM lab to replant outside. Parishioner Susan Moynihan has created an after school club that is taking caring of the garden, especially as we head into the summer.
More Students to Learn Spanish Beginning next year, all St. Hubert students in grades Pre-K through 8 will now receive Spanish instruction twice a week.
Improved Hours for Before and After School Care
Before care will begin at 6:30 am. Cost is $10 per day.
After care will be extended to 6:00 pm. Cost is $20 per day.
Thank you for all of your support this year. It has been an absolute pleasure serving St. Hubert School, an important mission of St. Hubert Parish. Reach out at any time with questions or concerns.
