Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday, one of the great mysteries of our faith. We have one God in three Persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It’s a mystery that theologians have dived into over the centuries.
Albert Einstein once said: “The most beautiful and deepest experience a man can have is the sense of the mysterious…To sense that behind anything that can be experienced there is a ‘something’ that our mind cannot grasp and whose beauty and simplicity are but a feeble reflection.” Einstein was immersed in science and mathematics. We’re immersed in God.
So for me, one of the most meaningful reflections of a mystery like the Trinity—one of the most important mysteries we’ll ever engage—is inspired by the First Letter of John:
“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God…Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8
Knowing God is love, the theologian will conclude that there is a natural interplay between the person who loves (the Father), the person who receives the love (the Son), and the love that is exchanged between them (the Holy Spirit). So, within the reality of love itself, we find the reality of how God expresses himself.
As such God is three persons constantly in communion…and constantly loving. The Trinity is a relationship of three persons continually interacting with each other. That means for all of us, created in God’s image and likeness, relationships have great meaning. The command to “love one another” is a command to experience the reality of who God is. It’s a way to reveal the Trinity, this deep mystery, in our everyday world, simply by wanting the best for someone else.
Love is a mystery, just like God is a mystery. But, then, “God is love.” The good news today is that it can be experienced.
Odds and Ends
Happy Father’s Day to all Our Fathers! Today, as we’re mindful of relationships, we celebrate our fathers, grandfathers, godfathers and the men who teach us about life and faith, and encourage us, challenge us and help us discover the best within. We’re also mindful of our fathers who go before us, remembering the ways they helped us, witnessed the Catholic faith to us, and formed us into the people we are. May God always bless you.
St. Hubert to Have a Blast with the Boomers! We sold out of tickets…twice! Just under 200 St. Hubert parishioners and students of all ages are headed for the Boomers game on Friday, June 21. Two of our parishioners will throw out the first pitch, and the Knights will be on hand with a color guard to honor our country. It’s time for baseball, hot dogs, fireworks, and a night to just have some fun. Thank you to St. Hubert School, our St. Hubert Stewards and the Knights of Columbus for organizing a great event. Play ball!
A Great Way to Participate at Mass. If you ever thought to yourself, “I’d like to be a Eucharistic Minister” or a lector, mass coordinator, altar server, or even thought you’d like to carry in the cross, it’s probably more than just an empty thought. It very well could be a movement of the Holy Spirit saying, “you can do it!” We’re looking for people to help in these important ministries. You’ll find a sign-up sheet in the narthex.
May God continue to bless you in the many ways you help build up St. Hubert Parish. It’s a great place to be and to discover how God is moving in our lives.
