In today’s first reading from the Book of Numbers, Moses responds to a young man who is upset. The spirit came to rest on two of the 70 elders who weren’t present at the gathering Moses arranged with God in the Tent—the place of the meeting.
The two were still in the camp, but they received the spirit to prophesy even though they weren’t with the others. It seemed to bother the young man. How was this possible?
But Moses answered him: “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!”
That’s the prayer of Moses, as well as the prayer of the Church. The day we were baptized, we were anointed with the Sacred Chrism and now share in a life with Christ. Just as Jesus was a priest, prophet and king so are we. We received the Spirit to go into the world and proclaim the good news.
We exercise our role of prophet whenever we speak the word of God. Every time we go to Mass, we speak the word of God in our responses and in the dialogue we share in our worship.
Whenever we pray the Our Father, we’re prophets, because we say word-for-word the same words Jesus taught us to pray. When we say the Our Father, we use Jesus’ words. Prophets don’t change God’s words, but say the word of God as it’s meant to be said.
We may not think of ourselves as prophets, or even worthy of the task, but the Spirit has rested upon us and SO we’re up for the task. As Jesus reminds us, “It wasn’t you who chose me, I chose you.” (John 15:16).
The Spirit & A Taste of St. Hubert The annual “A Taste of St. Hubert” is on October 6 after the 4:30 PM Mass. What I love about this event is the spirit that comes alive during our worship together and then the fellowship we share as we try different foods from the diversity of cultures representing our parish community.
I hope you will be able to join us for a really special evening. When the community gathers, the spirit is present. It’s something we can all taste and see!
May God the Holy Spirit be with you in all you do,
