Jesus’ Family

In today’s gospel, Jesus’ family comes to visit him.  When he hears they’re outside waiting for him, Jesus says something that throws us.  Instead of going out to greet them or asking them to be brought in, he says: “Who are my mother and brothers?”  He’ll go onto say those who do the will of God are his family as he motions to those in the circle around him.
 
It’s puzzling until we pray and reflect on the life of our own Blessed Mother.  If anyone followed God’s will it was her—from the moment of her Immaculate Conception.  We also know Joseph followed God’s will as he stayed attentive to the dreams God sent him to know how to care for and protect Jesus and Mary.

Odds & Ends

A Newly Ordained Deacon Serves at Our 9am Mass! My name is Deacon Jon Miskin. Just a few weeks ago, on May 23rd, I was ordained for the transitional diaconate for the Diocese of Little Rock.   My grandparents, Jim and Helen Moffett, have been parishioners of St. Hubert’s parish for years. This weekend, since they weren’t able to attend the ordination, I wanted to come up from Little Rock to celebrate with them by preaching and serving at the Lord’s table in their home parish.  I will be blessed to do so at this weekend’s 9am Mass.   I am extremely grateful to Fr. Mike and the entire parish for your hospitality and allowing me to celebrate this special occasion with you and my grandparents.   Please keep me in your prayers this year as I finish my last year of seminary at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana, preparing myself to be ordained to the priesthood next May! • Making Ends Meet.  This past year we had to replace a rooftop heating/cooling unit at the Pastoral Ministry Center, which cost $14,000.  Working with the finance council, we decided to include a second collection on June 17 & June 23 to help with this unexpected expense as we work to balance the budget. We’re grateful for any kind of contribution.  Thank you for considering it.
• Welcome back Fr. Rizzo!  Fr. Rizzo—our Pastor Emeritus—returns this Saturday for the 4:30pm Mass.  We miss him, so it will be a nice homecoming, a chance to reconnect, and to hear about how he’s enjoying his retirement.
• A Housemate for the Summer!  Mundelein Seminarian, Hank Lyon, will be living at the rectory with me the next two months.  He is doing his summer internship at Good Shepherd Hospital and the seminary asked me to provide some priestly support and council if needed. It’s good to have a house mate again!
• Priest Convocation: June 19-21.  Cardinal Cupich is gathering all the priests of the Archdiocese for a convocation.  All diocesan priests are expected to be there.  As such, on Tuesday, June 19 our daily Mass will be held at 11:15am in conjunction with our Totus Tuus day camp, instead of at 8:30am.  A visiting priest from the Joliet diocese has offered to help, for which we’re grateful.  The schedule for the rest of the week won’t be affected.

 
I’ll miss you this weekend as I take some time for some R&R.  May God continue to bless you and lead you in all you do.
