Sunday, October 8
th at the 10:45 AM Mass, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated. Those suffering from serious illnesses, whether physical or psychological, those facing surgery, or dealing with the limitations of aging are encouraged to receive the sacrament. It is open to those in need of physical and spiritual strengthening as they deal with health crises, no matter what their age. Caregivers are also welcome to receive the sacrament to aid them in their care of their loved ones.
Since sacraments are for the whole Church, even those present to witness and to pray for those being anointed receive benefits from the anointing liturgy. Theologians tell us that one of the effects of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a healing of the separation between the individual and the Church created by sickness.
As the whole community joins in prayer for our sick members, we enflesh the Church’s promise to remain faithful to the sick, the suffering, the weak and the struggling. Caregivers find support in our standing with them. In this sacrament the sick minister to us as well, as modeling hope in and union with Christ in his dying-rising way.
Ministers of Care will assist in the Communal Anointing rituals by welcoming people, giving them directions for the anointing, introducing the sick to the priest anointers, and standing as the community’s support of our sick members.
Please alert relatives and neighbors to the possibility of receiving this sacrament. Even if you will not be present for these liturgies, remember to pray for the sick of the parish. For more information, please contact Lynn Howard at
