Family #28 Our family is a single African American female fleeing a domestic violence situation. She has three sons ages 14, 10, 8, two daughters 9 and 16, and a new granddaughter. She currently works part time as a CNA. She is currently looking for more clients.
This family’s situation seems to be steady now. Mom is currently working from home. She reports that when her daughter is away at school she watches her granddaughter and when she returns back home her daughter is on duty. Meanwhile, she is still going to therapy for her arm and feels it is helping. She continues to go through the process to receive death benefits for her children and has a pending case.
Current Goals:
● Save at least 3 to 6 months’ worth of rent.
● Save 90% of income taxes.
● Make sure that her daughter is linked with services for her and the baby.
● Take advantage of the Women’s Program at Harper to pursue a career in the medical field
This mom is very grateful to have the support of the Peace and Justice Cluster.
Family #29 Our mom is a single white female with a three year old son who became homeless due to low income status. Her child’s father does not work and is not financially stable. She was staying with her child’s father and they were not getting along living with his parents. They stayed with friends for about two months before she went to the shelter in November of 2016.
Our mom got a new job! She now works as the General Manager for a chain of pizza restaurants. She is very excited and will be working a lot of hours. She is still working very hard on her goals, focusing on repairing her car, and increasing her savings. She is almost finished with repairing her car. She is very focused on saving, but she is finding it hard as she tries to catch up on other bills while working on her credit. She is excited to be a manager with a guaranteed 40 hour work week.
She is happy to be able to see her doctor and get medication to stabilize her mental health. Her son is doing well and her friend has been helping her out with child care. Our mom is in the process of finding her son an affordable preschool to attend. She is trying to work out child support arrangements with her ex-husband. Things are moving very slowly, yet she is trying to give him a chance to get a job since he is currently unemployed.
Current Goals:
● Save at least 3 to 6 months’ worth of rent.
● Save 100% of income taxes.
● Continue to keep mental health stabilized.
● Find affordable childcare.
New Hope is also grateful for the support the Peace and Justice Cluster has done for the program.
